ENOLA HOLMES 3

2026 - Netflix

ASSISTANT GRAPHIC DESIGNER

It’s the late 1800s and Enola travels to Malta and uncovers a historic injustice surrounding the British Military involvement in the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War. It was a fascinating job to be working with a heightened fictional world of Enola Holmes but be working and researching so much real military history. I was tasked with producing various hero and dressing props including historical military files, flags, crests and maps.

RMFA Files

In the pivotal moment of discovery, we find Enola in the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery records room. We made lots of paper wraps and labels to cover the hundreds of stacks of paper and boxes stacking the shelves. Enola scans the shelves and leafs through some folders before coming across the hero file.

I spent many weeks researching, contacting and visiting various British archives to get reference and an understanding of the British Military in the mediterranean in order to accurately create the file.

It was a real joy to have the time to go in depth and photograph various papers to help inform what graphics I chose to make. Predominantly, the files included handwritten accounts and reports on the military’s movements and missions, plus telegrams, regiment lists and scribbled notes.

I used a mixture of my handwriting and fonts to give variety of characters within the file, plus offsetting and overlapping writing on the document templates. As a finishing touch, I also created stamps to help give authenticity. Nick then assembled the file using all these elements and wrote some extra labels to fit the story beats as needed.

CREATING CRESTS

The RMFA set is one of the key locations in the story, where the mystery is discovered. It needed to look realistic and historical.

I created the original digital artwork seen left, based on real world variants of the RMFA emblem.

This was then altered slightly and given a painted look for various banners and flags on the RMFA set.

Given that the story centres around Enola & Tewkesbury’s wedding, we finally meet the Tewkesbury family. Therefore we also needed a crest.

I illustrated the crest seen on the right and digitally painted it for the set dec painters to add to the carriage. It was also used in all red for the Tewkesbury stationery upon which I wrote the long list of invitees.

MAPS OF MALTA

Used for background dressing but large enough to be picked up so I spent a good few days putting these together, I don’t know which is my favourite in the end!

I used an iStock vector of the Malta land shape but created all the other details myself. The left was used for a police station, the right was intended to be folded and come from the “Historical Guide” book seen in the previous section for Enola to look at.

I’d love to continue making maps like this in the future!
